Artist Personal Statement

Sometimes, I believe nothing matters, and I despair. Sometimes, I believe nothing matters, and I am immensely hopeful. My voice dictates which one I feel on a given day. My voice dictates my reality.

I think of my zodiac, Libra, more frequently these days. I think of the vast, empty space outside our atmosphere and breath a sigh of relief. My insecurities are, in fact, very small. Comparatively. Or, uncomfortably close in size compared to me. Libra, The Scales. Ruled by Venus, the goddess of love, justice, fertility, beauty, and harmony. Each possessing equal and opposing forces vying for dominance. Love, hatred. Justice, prejudice. Fertility, drought. Beauty, ugliness. Harmony, dissonance. I feel their clash inside me just as my ancestors did. My voice dictates which pole I attract.

I embrace the duality of it all. I find joy in mixing contradictory qualities that can occur when studying a role or interpreting a script. The masculine for the feminine, vice versa. Detestable heroes, sympathetic villains. Or, the simple joy of cartoonish absurdity whenever possible. My usual demeanor may look calm, reserved even. I excel in meditative and thoughtful monologues. On many occasions, white-hot rays of brilliant extroversion burns all doubt that I am all but a charismatic and enchanting being. The looks of surprise makes it all worth it. My muse is powerful, and costly. I often reel them back to heal, reset, and compose. For the next take. It’s freeing. It’s taxing.

Sometimes, I believe nothing matters. But I absolutely believe consequences exist. To SPEAK is to be consequential. To ACT is to be consequential. I spent my youth denying my power, living under religious dogma or imposter syndrome. Rejecting those obstacles is only the start. I had to build back a meaning all my own, brick by brick.
